When I re-read TIMES (Aug 1, 2005) article about 'Eyewitnesses to Hiroshima', I was quite shocked that there are more for me to know about the event. The photos and the stories taken and written by the journalists and the interviewees were more than just a piece of history. It told about the sufferings, the feelings and the people involved. I read with sadness and hatred.
It all started with Japanese Occupation in 1942 to 1945. That 3 years was hard for most Asians that went through the war. It was that greediness of the Japanese empire to conquer more land along the Asian road after she won a battle against Russia.
Then the Americans came. The late President Harry S. Truman was briefed about the making of atomic bomb. He approved it as he thought it would help end the war quickly. He was right then. The early mornings of Aug 6 and Aug 9, 1945, two planes carried the bombs naming Little Boy and Fat Man (respective to the dates) to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The aftermath of Hiroshima bombing was far more devastating than Nagasaki bombing due to the location of the bomb explosion. The explosion not only stunned the plane crews, it also shocked the world on TV. The power of nuclear bomb was not to be underestimated. Tens of thousands of the people in the two areas was killed or hit by radiation which then led to cancer and adnormalities of their children born. Both physically and mentally hurt... were what the people suffered. Seeing their homes brought to just ashes, they have never thought the day just came.
The USA and other nations with nuclear weapons declare to disallow proliferation of nuclear weapons by signing treaties. Now, Iran and North Korea are posing threats as claimed by USA. The force to "denuclearise" these two nations was about to escalate. Would a second Atomic bombing resurface in 21st century? That's the question floating in many people's minds. Would it happen on that day, that day told by many historians and ancient people, that is on 2012? People titled it Doomsday 2012, the extinction of human civilisation.
I thought, how I wish the nuclear weapons were never made back then. USA should have used other forceful means to make Japaneses surrender. And also, Iran and North Korea would not have the technologies to make nuclear weapons. Nuclear is meant for peaceful use, not for wars or ways to show who is powerful. I hope US can lead its way to other nuclear powers. My world is at risk!!!
Below is a YouTube video about the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing. Hope you will watch it and be reminded about the incident.
